1 Introduction

For the SIA project it is necessary to come up with a precise and comprehensive definition of SIC Classification of Industrial Sectors by selecting the SIC codes that describe an ‘Industrial Activity’. The latest report available on London Industrial Land Demand (CAG Consultants, 2017)[4] identified 377 business codes (out of 731, see list at the bottom of page). However, apparently there are industrial activities that were excluded from this definition (e.g. washing, maintenance, storage activities).

This analysis aims to complement the list of SIC codes developed by CAG Consultants.

2 Analysis

2.1 Industrial definition by SIC code in CAG report

‘There are 21 sections, 88 divisions, 272 groups, 615 classes and 191 subclasses. The full structure of UK SIC (2007) is shown on pages 27 to 53. As with SIC (2003), the full number of arithmetically possible subdivisions at each level is not necessarily created, varying according to the diversity of activities’[1].

This analysis looks at the ‘count’ of codes per ‘Section’ to analyse the nature of the codes selected in the CAG report and identify gaps.

This summary table shows the ‘Sections’ that have 100% of their codes included in the CAG report: ‘Construction’, ‘Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply’, ‘Manufacturing’ and ‘Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities’. Additionally, the table gives and idea of the ‘Sections’ where there might be ‘Industrial Activities’ codes that were excluded from the analysis in the CAG report. For example, ‘Transportation and Storage’ and ‘Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles’.

2.2 Industrial activities to complement the CAG report

Some industrial activities were identified that are not included in the 377 codes listed in Appendix 1 of the ‘London Industrial Land Demand’ report (CAG report). For example, washing, maintenance, storage activities. These activities where searched on the Companies House ‘Nature of business’ website[3] and chequed against the CAG report list (377 codes).
